FRENCH CANON DE 75mm MODLE 1897
This image by the French artist N. Berauil was taken from Les Canons de la Victoire 1914-1918, Volume 1 (see Bibliography), and shows a French "75" battery in action in the early days of World War 1.  The gun was a revolutionary field artillery piece when introduced in 1897 and was still a superior weapon although the other major powers had caught up the British 18-Pounder Quick Firing Gun and the German Krupp 77mm Field Piece.  These guns were the standard equipment for divisional artillery batteries.
