With the collapse of the Roman Empire, Italy until 1861, was divided into several relatively large independent states and principalities. The Royal Italian state during Napoleon's time from 1805 to 1814 embraced just the northern portion of what is now modern Italy. The southern portion was the domain of the Kingdom of Naples. The Kingdom of Sardinia remained under Bourbon rule. The Royal Army represented here is the northern state ruled by its Viceroy and son-in-law of Napoleon, Prince Eugene Beauharnais. The Royal Italian Army provided large contingents to Napoleon's main armies and fought in Spain and Russia. The infantry was organized exactly along the French style with each regiment consisting of three battalions each of four fusilier, one grenadier, and one voltigeur companies. The uniforms of the two periods, 1804-1807 and 1808-1812, were perhaps the most attractive in Europe. In fact, Napoleon seriously considered re-uniforming his armies in white but this lasted roughly one year in 1808 during which only a handful of regiments were outfitted in the habit-blanc. |
